Librarian Villager Trades
Librarians buy paper, books, ink sacs, and books and quills for emeralds. They sell enchanted books and useful supplies, from bookshelves to candles. A regular enchanted book costs one book plus 5–64 emeralds; treasure books such as Mending use double the base emerald price, with the same 64-emerald cap.

Enchanted book price checker
Mending I: 10–38 emeralds + 1 book. Treasure book; base price before discounts.
How to get a librarian
Place an unclaimed lectern where an unemployed villager can use it to take the librarian profession. Check the offered book before making a trade if you intend to reroll the selection.
All librarian trades by level
These are the standard librarian trade options with the Trade Rebalance experiment off. An individual villager may offer only a selection of the trades shown. Book prices vary by enchantment level and treasure status.
| Librarian level | Sell to the librarian | Buy from the librarian |
|---|---|---|
| Novice | 24 paper → 1 emerald | 9 emeralds → 1 bookshelf; 1 book + emeralds → enchanted book |
| Apprentice | 4 books → 1 emerald | 1 emerald → 1 lantern; enchanted book offer |
| Journeyman | 5 ink sacs → 1 emerald | 1 emerald → 4 glass; enchanted book offer |
| Expert | Java: 1 book and quill → 1 emerald (MC-248042). Bedrock: 2 books and quills → 1 emerald. | 4 emeralds → 1 compass; 5 emeralds → 1 clock; enchanted book offer |
| Master | — | 3 emeralds → 1 red or yellow candle. In Bedrock, red has a 75% chance and yellow a 25% chance. |
Enchanted book prices
For book level L, a regular book's base emerald price is selected between 2 + 3 × L and 6 + 13 × L. Treasure books double that rolled price. Apply the 64-emerald cap after doubling and before discounts. Every book trade also needs one ordinary book.
| Book level | Regular book (emeralds) | Treasure book (emeralds) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5–19 | 10–38 |
| 2 | 8–32 | 16–64 |
| 3 | 11–45 | 22–64 |
| 4 | 14–58 | 28–64 |
| 5 | 17–64 | 34–64 |
The treasure enchantments are Curse of Binding, Curse of Vanishing, Frost Walker, Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst. Librarians never sell Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst; the checker marks them as unavailable instead of quoting a trade price. The table's higher-level treasure ranges describe the formula; a book still cannot exceed that enchantment's own maximum level.
Under standard trades, the eligible enchantment is selected with equal chance, then its book level is chosen. Duplicate book offers are possible. Sweeping Edge is available only in Java Edition. See the enchantments list for item compatibility and maximum levels.
How to get Mending from a librarian
With the experiment off, Mending can appear on a librarian at any level; it is not restricted to a particular biome. Its level-I base price is 10–38 emeralds plus a book. Mending is a treasure enchantment, so an enchanting table cannot supply it. Loot and fishing are other possible sources.
Reroll a lectern before the first trade
For a novice villager you have never traded with, remove the lectern so it loses the profession, then replace the lectern to get another set of offers. Repeat while looking for your book. Once you make the first trade, its profession and offers are permanently locked; breaking the lectern then will not reroll them. In Bedrock, villagers without experience can also refresh their offers periodically.

Trade Rebalance experiment: books by biome
This table applies only when the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment in Java, or Villager Trade Rebalancing in Bedrock, is enabled. It is separate from the standard trade table above. Novice, Apprentice, and Journeyman book offers come from the librarian's biome pool; the Master book is guaranteed.
| Librarian biome | Common book pool | Guaranteed Master book |
|---|---|---|
| Desert | Fire Protection, Thorns, Infinity | Efficiency III |
| Plains | Punch, Smite, Bane of Arthropods | Protection III |
| Savanna | Knockback, Curse of Binding, Sweeping Edge (Sweeping Edge: Java only) | Sharpness III |
| Snowy | Aqua Affinity, Looting, Frost Walker | Silk Touch I |
| Taiga | Blast Protection, Fire Aspect, Flame | Fortune II |
| Jungle | Feather Falling, Projectile Protection, Power | Unbreaking II |
| Swamp | Depth Strider, Respiration, Curse of Vanishing | Mending I |
With this experiment enabled, Mending comes only from Master swamp librarians. Snowy Masters guarantee Silk Touch, and Taiga Masters guarantee Fortune II. The Savanna common pool includes Sweeping Edge only in Java; Bedrock has no Sweeping Edge enchantment.
