Minecraft /enchant Command Generator
Use /enchant to add compatible enchantments to the item in a target’s main hand. Java accepts resource IDs such as minecraft:sharpness; Bedrock accepts enchantment names and requires cheats. Both editions enforce the normal maximum level and compatibility rules.
Generator
Hold the selected item in the target’s main hand. This tool checks your selected rows; it cannot inspect enchantments already on an in-game item.
Bedrock: enable cheats and use an account with command permission (operator level 1). Java requires operator level 2.
How to use
- Choose your edition and target. Select Java or Bedrock, then choose a player selector or enter a player name.
- Choose the held item and enchantments. Pick the item, add enchantment rows and set each level. Resolve compatibility warnings before using the commands.
- Copy and run each command. Hold the selected item in the target’s main hand. Copy the commands and run them one at a time with the required permissions.
/enchant syntax: Java and Bedrock
Java Edition
/enchant <targets> <enchantment> [<level>]
The enchantment argument is a resource ID. This generator includes the minecraft: namespace. Omitting a level uses level 1. You need operator permission level 2.
Bedrock Edition
/enchant <player: target> <enchantmentName> [level]
Enable cheats and use operator permission level 1. The generator uses enchantment names. Sweeping Edge is exclusive to Java and cannot be generated for Bedrock.
Examples
With a bow in each target’s main hand, this adds Infinity at its default level:
/enchant @a infinity
With a compatible sword in the nearest player’s main hand, this adds Sharpness V:
/enchant @p sharpness 5
For the Java resource-ID form, use /enchant @p minecraft:sharpness 5. Build your sword or pickaxe setup with the best sword enchantments and best pickaxe enchantments guides.
Why /enchant fails
- The target has no item in the main hand. Holding it in the offhand does not meet this requirement.
- The enchantment does not apply to that item. For example, a sword cannot receive Fortune.
- The item already has a conflicting enchantment. Sharpness conflicts with Smite and Bane of Arthropods; Multishot conflicts with Piercing.
- The requested level exceeds the enchantment’s maximum. The generator clamps the output to the legal range and shows a warning.
- In Java, the item already carries that enchantment. In Bedrock, an enchantment already at its maximum also prevents the operation.
- The target is unavailable, or you lack command permissions. Bedrock also requires cheats.
Multiple commands run sequentially on the same item. Resolve conflict warnings first; the generator cannot clear existing enchantments. Check the full enchantments list for levels and compatible items.
Can commands go above the maximum level?
/enchant cannot exceed the normal maximum, even with command permissions. Other commands, such as /give, can create items beyond these limits; their syntax is different.
Plan a Survival setup
For a Survival build using enchanted books, open the anvil order calculator or compare the best enchantments by item. Commands apply enchantments directly and do not model the book-combining order.

FAQ
Why does /enchant say it cannot enchant my item?
Check the main hand, the item’s compatible enchantments, existing conflicts and the maximum level. Java also rejects an enchantment the item already has; Bedrock rejects one already at its maximum.
Can /enchant go above the maximum level?
No. /enchant enforces the normal maximum level. This generator clamps an excessive level and warns you before copying.
Do I need cheats on Bedrock?
Yes. Bedrock requires cheats and operator permission level 1. Java requires operator permission level 2.
